On Friday, August 15, the 2025 World Lacrosse Men’s U20 Championships get underway from Jeju Island in South Korea. The tournament runs through August 24. U20 events are particularly fun. Players may already be hyped as the next great star in lacrosse, and this event serves as the stage to validate the hype. It’s also the stage where you can find players from around the world who might not have the same fanfare as those uber-hyped stars, but use the spotlight of a global championship to make a name for themselves.
The All World team from the 2022 U20 Championship included an MVP and Most Outstanding Player awards at each position, along with six other players rounding out the team. All 11 players are currently in the PLL. CJ Kirst was MVP, while Ross Scott was named outstanding attackman, CJ Kirst outstanding midfielder, Kenny Brower outstanding defenseman, and Liam Entenmann outstanding goalkeeper. Graham Bundy Jr, Owen Hiltz, Graydon Hogg, Brennan O’Neill, Levi Verch, and Jake Piseno rounded out the All World Team. There’s also the President’s Team which consists of the top 10 athletes outside Pool A teams. Josh Balcarcel, a midfielder for the California Redwoods, made that team
This list is kept just for players either currently playing or committed to play at the college level. If a country doesn’t have a lot of players listed, don’t take that to mean they aren’t talented. For many nations, players compete for their club teams in their home country and not in the American university system. They may be talented enough to play in the US, but play in their home nation instead. Japan’s lacrosse program has taken massive strides and in many international competitions has pushed towards bronze contender status; most of their players compete in Japan and not for American universities. And because it’s a U20 event, there is no shortage of high school age players competing. As an example, the Haudenosaunee list is short, but their roster has current high school players on it who are uncommitted and likely will get attention at the DI level. Declan and Dieter Butler, brothers currently at Calvert Hall, are playing on Team Ireland. Players as young as 16 years old will take the field at the U20 World Championships; it’s one of the best places to see the stars of tomorrow taking the spotlight.
All told, there are over 100 lacrosse programs represented at the U20 games, with players coming from all ranks of college lacrosse from MCLA up through division one. National championship winning programs are represented, as are programs on both coasts of the US. Some of the elite high school programs are also represented on the rosters. If I missed anyone, please contact me and I’ll add them.
